Project Background and Purpose

Cheating The System

Sun Energy CA was a difficult company to work with. The solar market was saturated, and it was just another in a long line of companies selling the service. We could not compete on price, as the owner would not allow that strategy.

So, how do we penetrate the local market? What about using the actual local market? Homeowners that wanted solar were unique in that they preferred to be self-sufficient. They prefer to shop locally because it boosts the community as a whole.

My way in was to use the sister-company (Nutrition HD – a supplement store) as a trojan horse. If they wanted money from one, they needed to accept the other. And it worked! We got into Market 760 for July 2021. The idea was to give away free supplements and water for contact information. I also worked with the food vendors to provide discounts if they signed up for a solar quote. It went great!

This was a novel idea… nobody had ever tried it (to my knowledge). So I had to find a way in. Most farmer’s markets at the time rejected the idea right away. They thought nobody wants to go shopping for vegetables and have someone try to sell them home improvements. But, they did! Once we penetrated the market, we were welcomed. And our competitors started copying us right away.
